Hi John,

By 2030 we're going to have around 240 million leaders around the world, these are people who are responsible for the lives of other people at work. Unfortunately, most of these leaders are bluntly speaking, not good, they aren't bad people, they just aren't good leaders, and it's not really their fault because the way that we teach and talk about leadership is extremely antiquated and that’s largely what leaders today are familiar with and practice.

We have a massive leadership gap today and the data proves it. Consider the following stats:

  • Almost half of employees say they can do a better job than their boss (Randstad).
  • 60% of employees have left jobs or are considering leaving because they don’t like their direct supervisors (Randstad).
  • 50% of employees have left a job to get away from a manager in order to improve their overall life at some point during their career (Gallup).
  • Nearly half of British workers say they can do a better job than their boss (Bailey, 2017).
  • Managers account for at least 70% variance in employee engagement (Gallup).
  • 75% of hiring managers today believe that leadership skills are hard to find in new recruits (PwC).
  • 87% of companies are not effective at building global leaders (Deloitte).

Perhaps the most shocking statistic of all comes from leadership firm DDI which surveyed over 25,000 leaders around the world and only 42% said that the overall quality of leadership inside of their organizations was high. Perhaps more striking was that only 14% of organizations have what DDI calls a strong “bench,” which is ready-now leaders who can step in to replace those who retire or move on. Meaning, if a “leadership” virus wiped out all of the present days leaders, we would have nobody who could step in to take their place. Even sports teams have talented players on the bench who could step up when someone gets injured, but not our companies.

It's clear that leadership around the world is failing us...These are the people who are in charge of creating jobs, developing culture, shaping society, fighting for social causes, and making a positive impact on all of lives.

It's time for us to become Future-Ready Leaders!

Jacob
